TAKE-BACK OF WASTE ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT / BATTERIES

We believe in treating the environment with care, which is why we offer you easy, free ways to hand in your old electrical equipment and batteries.

Consumers play an absolutely key role in the system for handling electrical appliances and portable batteries. They are the ones who decide what happens to an old appliance or battery. Old and unwanted electrical equipment and batteries do not belong in unsorted municipal waste; they should instead be handed in at collection points, known as take-back points, from where they go on to be reused or recycled.

Consumers must be informed by the symbol below that the electrical equipment or battery in question does not belong in municipal waste. All new electrical equipment and batteries are marked in this way. The symbol may appear on the device itself, on its packaging, or in the instructions for use or the warranty certificate.

HOW DO I DISPOSE OF AN OLD APPLIANCE OR BATTERIES?

WHY RECYCLE?

Batteries, and not only electrical equipment, contain many recyclable metals such as zinc, iron, manganese, nickel, cadmium and lead. Some of these substances are also very hazardous to the environment and to human health, particularly mercury, lead and cadmium. Certain batteries are often marked with the symbol of the chemical element they contain (Pb, Cd, Hg).

By handing batteries and electrical equipment in at a take-back point, we save primary raw materials through material recycling and at the same time protect our environment from any improper handling.

Unused batteries that are not handed in for recycling at take-back points but are stored instead in office drawers, say, or anywhere else in homes and businesses, can even go on to cause a fire. Batteries containing lithium are especially prone to this. For safety reasons, then, it is very important to hand used batteries in for recycling as soon as possible.
